Interview with Nicole Storey, author of The Chosen One (Grimsley Hollow Series)

Describe your series? What genre would you classify it into?

My book is about an 11-year-old boy who has autism.  He has no friends until he meets a young witch named Eve and she introduces him to another world called Grimsley Hollow.  He is needed to help the magical beings of this world defeat an evil witch who is trying to take over.  Along the way, he makes some new friends, including an ornery pixy, a werewolf, and a vampire.  I describe my books as middle-grade fantasy with a touch of paranormal and a whole lot of Halloween!

How did you come up with the idea for the series?

I simply combined some of my favourite things that I love and am passionate about: special-needs children, Halloween, and magic.  My son has autism and he is also the main character in the story.  I decided to write the book to get a message out to children: Special-needs kids are not so different from them in the fact that they only want to be accepted for who they are and included in our lives.

About the Book

Gage Gilbert is an eleven-year-old boy who has autism, loves Halloween, and has no friends. Although he has always been happy with the safety and security of his family, he longs for a real friend and adventure – not just the ones he makes up in his head. Then, he meets Eve.

Eve is a young witch from another world called Grimsley Hollow. It’s where all magical beings live in safety and peace, but their world is in trouble. Gage is the only one who can help save them from an evil witch who has taken control.

My Review

The Chosen One revolves around a young autistic boy named Gage, who does not have friends and feels isolated because of his autism. All this changes when he meets Eve and comes to know about another world called Grimsley Hollow where all the magical beings we read in books about, reside. This is the start of an adventure which involves witches, werewolves, vampires, pixies and dragons. This is a classic good vs. evil story as Gage and all his new friends unite to fight against an evil witch Inari, who has captured their parents.

An introduction to the Grimsley Hollow Series

I find it hard to describe my own writing.  If I had to choose a genre – a “box” that my book would fit into – I would say that it is a middle-grade fantasy book with a touch of paranormal and a lot of Halloween!  LOL!  However, as many writers will tell you, we all have trouble making our books fit into one or two specific genres.  Most books can be described in many ways – depending on how the reader interprets it.

Grimsley Hollow-The Chosen One is about an eleven-year-old autistic boy named Gage.  He has no friends and he loves Halloween.  I based the main character on my own son, Gage, who also has autism.  In the story, Gage meets a young witch named Eve, and his life is changed forever.  Eve lives in another realm called Grimsley Hollow, and her world is being threatened by an evil witch named Inari, who is trying to take over.  Gage is the only one who can help.  In his adventure, he makes some magical friends, which includes an ornery pixy named Puck, a half vampire-half fairy named Ladon, and a werewolf named Siren.  Gage also learns that he has magical powers and that “autism” is just a word and not a definition of who is really is.

My journey as an Author by Nicole Storey

.
Hello!  My name is Nicole Storey and I am the author of Grimsley Hollow-The Chosen One.  This is the first book in, what I hope will be, the Grimsley Hollow series.  I live in Georgia with my husband, two amazing children, my cat (who thinks she’s a tiger), and a bunch of goldfish.

Unlike some, I didn’t want to be a writer when I grew up.  I have always loved writing stories and reading books, but my dream was to become a marine biologist.  I wanted to live on the beach somewhere and swim with dolphins, whales, and sharks.  I wanted to preserve our beautiful oceans and sea-life.  When I was little, I believed there was an under-water city somewhere occupied by mermaids and one day, they would make me and honorary member of their family.  Yeah, I’ve always had a big imagination, so if anyone asks where my kids got their’s from, now you know.  That is probably the one aspect of my children’s personalities that can’t be blamed on my husband.  🙂
