Charlotte introduces the Draykon series

The Draykon Trilogy is the first segment of a planned, well, sequence of series. The three books (Draykon, Lokant and Orlind) cover the first big story arc: what happens when Llandry Sanfaer, a young, shy jeweller, stumbles across a strange – and strangely mesmerizing – new gemstone? The consequences of that discovery will completely change both, her life and her world. By the end of this trilogy, humans are no longer the only sentient species in the Seven Realms world: an ancient race has returned and the two will have to find ways to co-exist.

The Seven Realms is an odd place, composed of lands where it’s always light (the Daylands) and realms where it’s always dark (the Darklands). Existing alongside the Seven are two alternate planes of reality, colloquially known as the Uppers (connected most closely to the Daylands) and the Lowers (connected to the Darklands). These Off-Worlds, as they are collectively known, are dangerous and unpredictable and nobody really knows how they work or how to survive there reliably. Both places are important throughout the series.

There are two main protagonists across this trilogy, both women. Llan Sanfaer is a twenty-year-old, winged human of the Daylands Realm of Glinnery. She’s an only child, and as a result her parents are particularly protective of her. She’s a jeweller by trade and extremely shy. Her counterpart, Lady Evastany Glostrum, is her opposite in many ways: she’s a mature woman and an aristocrat of the Darklands realm of Glour. Both women will be bound up in the world-shaking series of events that follows the discovery of Llandry’s gem.

There are secrets galore surrounding Llandry and Eva’s world, many of which are discovered over the course of the trilogy. What is so special about this gem, that someone is willing to kill for it? Who are the strangely powerful white-haired sorcerers who seem to be involved every step of the way? Why are they interested in the stone, and the world that produced it? And what really became of the mysterious Seventh Realm?

The first trilogy draws to a close with the release of the third book, Orlind, in a few days’ time. Later this year I’ll be starting work on the next set of books (maybe another trilogy, I’m not yet sure). These will be set in the same world, and will take place after the events of the first series. We’ll be meeting some new protagonists, plus revisiting many of the characters from the Draykon books. When the dust of the racial wars has settled, how will the new Seven Realms look? What will become of the Off-Worlds once their old masters have returned? And have we really seen the last of the Lokants?

Book One: Draykon

When shy and retiring Llandry Sanfaer discovers a mesmerizing new gemstone, she suddenly becomes the most famous jeweller across the Seven Realms. Demand for the coveted stone escalates fast; when people begin dying for it, Llandry finds that she herself has become a target.

Lady Evastany Glostrum has her life in pristine order. Prestigious, powerful and wealthy, she is on the verge of crowning her successes with the perfect marriage. But when her closest friend is murdered for the jewellery she wears, Eva is drawn into the mystery surrounding the curious “istore” gem.

The emergence of the stone is causing chaos across the Seven. Gates between the worlds are opening at will, pulling hordes of creatures through from the shadowy Lower Realm and the glittering Uppers. As Eva works to discover the culprit behind the spreading disorder, Llandry must learn the truth about her precious istore stone – before she herself becomes a victim.

Book Two: Lokant

The long-vanished draykon race has been restored to the Seven Realms, and the mystery of the istore stone is resolved. But Lady Eva Glostrum returns to Glour City with many questions unanswered. Who are the enigmatic sorcerers who woke the draykon? Their powers are beyond anything she has ever known. With one dead and one vanished – literally – Eva has little to go on save a book taken from a mysterious tower in the Lowers, its cover marked with the strange word “Lokant.”

Llandry Sanfaer is anxious to learn more about the glorious draykoni, whose story is so inexplicably bound up with her own. But when she brings another draykon back from the Long Sleep, she finds she has made a grave mistake. Worse, a white-haired sorcerer with a talent for mind control is stalking her across the Worlds…

As war builds between humankind and draykoni, Eva must uncover the identities of the sinister white-haired practitioners – and come to terms with the truth of her own heritage.

And Llandry must learn why she appears to be their primary target…

Book Three: Orlind

War has broken out between the humans of the Seven Realms and the long-lost draykoni race. Llandry’s home city is under attack, its defenders scrambling to find a way to fight the draykon enemy. The outcome of the conflict seems certain – until the draykoni vanish. Where could they have gone, and why?

Lady Eva Glostrum is convinced that this means bad news. The Lokant sorcerer Krays is still at large, and his mysterious projects centre on her world – and the draykoni. Could he have something to do with their disappearance? If so, why? And what will it mean for the Seven Realms when the draykoni come back?

As Llandry fights to defend her home, Eva sets out in pursuit of Krays. Determined to learn the truth, she’ll go to any le
ngths to prevent him from damaging the Seven. Her quest will take her right into the heart of Krays’s Library – and there she will uncover another long-kept secret.

  4. Beautifully summed up!

  5. Thank you, I’m glad it helped represent the books a bit better! It can be hard to do that in a blurb of only one or two paragraphs. Actually that’s one of the trickiest things about self-publishing, for me: trying to encapsulate what the book’s about in a short synopsis. There’s far too much of it in my head for that!
